Information for our Local Organizing Institute

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Sicilia (IZS Si) was established in the late 1920s, with the aim of infectious and diffusive disease control and vaccine production. IZS Si is a Public Health Institute operating on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Health.
The IZS Si has its headquarters in Palermo and four Territorial Areas spread in the Sicilian territory, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (Messina), Catania, Ragusa and Caltanissetta.
The IZS Si has pursued, over the years, the objectives of the eradication of infectious and diffusive diseases, food safety, animal welfare and control of zoonoses.
The fundamental tasks of the Institute are the experimental scientific research in the veterinary field, the assessment of the animal health status and healthiness of products of animal origin. At the IZS Si there are 5 National Reference Centers (Tick Borne Diseases, Leishmaniasis, Toxoplasmosis, Anisakiasis and Monitoring of diseases and welfare of Sea Turtles) and 4 OIE Reference Laboratories (Babesiosis, Theileriosis, Leishmaniasis and contagious Agalassia), which represent laboratories of excellence to support the national and international scientific community.
In the Mediterranean area, several relevant infectious diseases are related to the spreading of arthropods of sanitary interest. In such context, at the IZS Si the Laboratory of Entomology and environmental vector control works in close synergy with the National Reference Centre for Tick Borne Diseases (National Reference Centre for Anaplasma, Babesia, Rickettsia and Theileria) and the National Reference Center for Leishmaniosis and with the OIE Reference Laboratories. The Laboratory of Entomology carries out entomological monitoring for national surveillance plans, identification of arthropods that are vectors of animal and zoonotic diseases, scientific research in the field of arthropod vectors, control and prevention strategies.
Among the most recent achievements of the IZS Si, there are the establishment of the Mediterranean Veterinary Biobank and the creation of a surgical room for preclinical experimentation.
